Okay, I have a question. I have my nipples pierced, and on Thursday, I have to go in to the doctor's for a mamogram. Do you have to take piercings out for this? I've never had one before, so I don't know. Any other helpful hints?

What I've heard about them, they sound very uncomfortable. I have no idea about the jewelry though.....is there anyway you can call ahead to find out?

Do you know what kind of technology mamograms use to "read" the inside of the breast? Cuz I sure don't but most likely the metal in the nipples could interfere with the reading..... I'm not sure if a nonmetal spacer would be good either, because I thought mamograms, kinda smooshed the breast almost into a pancake type shape, so having something hard in there might hurt.

Anyone know?

Oh without a doubt you will have to take out the piercing. I haven't actually had one done before but I know someone who has and you will definitely not want that metal in your nipple while it gets squashed into a pancake. ouch

oohhh - having had a few mammo's over the years I certainly don't think I would want to try fresh nipple piercings with it - I might would reschedule a couple weeks if that is possible. I would say the metal could cause some troubles with the reading, I've always been told to not wear deodorant, lotions, etc... even before going in. I would definitely call the doctors office about it.

You may want to call your doctor's office and find out whether the lab will allow you to wear your jewelry.

I have a mammogram scheduled at Northwestern in Chicago (large, well-known hospital). They told me they can perform the exam with the jewelry in and have done so on several patients to date. Keep in mind that the metal can interfere with the imaging and it may have to be removed depending on what they're looking for. I have had mammograms before but this will be the first time I'll have my "boobies smushed" since they've been pierced. The pressure is mostly on the breast, not on the nipple area and I have not found the exam to be uncomfortable in the past. Then again, I have not yet done this with jewelry.

If this is a routine exam, you may want to reschedule. However, if it's for diagnostic purposes, deal with your health first, then your piercings. Good luck to you, I hope all goes well.
