I just got my navel pierced today and my piercer told me to go out and buy lever 2000 or dial liquid soap and neosporin, well i got dial soap and neosporin but I read on here to avoid it because it delays healing time due to the petroleum. I was wondering what was the general opinion on this.

I am not a piercer simply a piercee... smile But I would say NO to the neosporin unless you have problems. That was what I was told. The most important things I can pass on are not to touch it unless you are cleaning it and to keep it clean. Dial dried my skin out. (Mind you I am very fair skinned) I bought the Provon. (I think triblaectic has it?) I love it. It worked much better for me. Two months into it I had a bit of a problem and I used Bacitracin then but my piercer was very specific about how to use it...place it on the ring, wipe off the excess...leave it on at night only for three days then three days off..washing it in the morning...I cleared up. My navel didn't really start to look normal for three months. Keep it clean. Warm water felt wonderful on mine when it would get...ha...for lack of a better word..all crusty. Hope I helped you... laugh

Bacatrin and neosporin are no-no's. They are oil based, which doesn't wash away, it attracts dirt, which isn't something you want. Dial is harsh for many people, if it works for you, good.

But forget putting any ointments on it. Try salt soaks instead. For specific instructions, check out tribalectic's healing and aftercare information from the menue to the left.

oooo i HATE bacitracin!!!! lol. when I got my first tattoo I was stupid and I didn't know about tattoo goo and the guy told me to use that on my tattoo as aftercare and yech. with tattoo goo my colours stayed better and I didn't need a touchup really as much
but same for piercings. No to Bacitracin/Neosporin or anything like that

Not to mention that many people are allergic to Bacitracin and Neosporin. Those things definitely do not belong in a piercing. As Leia said, use the seasalt soaks, and if you have a couple of bucks to spend, get some Satin soap right here at Tribalectic. Good stuff.

Neosporin should only be used if there's an infection, and that really only applies to cuts and scrapes. The problem with using it on a piercing, is that it suffocates the hole, which can really prolong the healing. A friend of mine put neosporin on her navel piercing, and it took 2 years to heal (of course she also used hydrogen peroxide)

Even though piercings are NOT puncture wounds (punctures only have an enterance hole), the principle applies...these products are NOT intended to be used inside the skin, just on top of the skin.
