Hey guys, I have a question for ya. My girlfriend recently decided that she wanted to get her nostril pierced. She wants to get a really small piece of jewelry for it though. Do these piercings swell very much? She would like to put in her jewelry of choice immediately, but we're unsure if that is possible or not. When I got my labret done, I had to wear one of those long ones for a while at first. Thanks for any replies!

It's a really bad idea to get such a small stud when the nostril is first pierced because this risk is incredibly high that it could sink into the piercing and not heal properly. I don't know of many piercers that would even pierce with such a small piece of jewelry.

Nostril screws are normally what she'd be looking for, and the stud size is what varies on each.

I was pierced with an 18g screw with, I believe, a 2mm gem.

ETA - I have since changed it out to a 1.5mm gem. The micro gems are super tiny... I'd be scared of it sinking into even a healed piercing, personally.

Also wanted to add, since you really don't know the wearable length you'd need, you should get a stright nose screw to be bent at the piercer's, or buy one from them and get it custom bent.

If you buy/bring in a pre-bent nose screw(most widely available) to your piercer's, Its possiable to re-bend it, but more risky as bending small gauge metel like that causes pressure points that could break it.

Its safer to go with a stright pin in titanium or SS made to be bent into a fishtail/screw shape. I would much rather trust an able pro to bend them, than I would trust myself to be able to.

I would be worried about the small gem sinking into any piercing as well. I have had experiences in the past when I was little with small studs and my lobes, not a pretty sight. Although I have seen girls who have them and they look pretty, like a speck of glitter.

The SS one I had before this one was 1.5 I think and I thought it was pretty small. I've got another one which I'm sure is 2mm and although it is rather large I guess...I much prefer this look.

Way back when I had my nostril pierced (the first time), I thought I just wanted a tiny little sparkle on there too. I brought a friend's nose screw to the piercer's and asked if he could use that (not knowing what I was doing... friend's jewelery??' what the heck?) and he said he could. I think it got "sterilized" in a little puddle of alcohol, and then he didn't even know how to put it in the piercing properly, and that was uncomfortable, to say the least. After a while of him struggling with the screw, I asked if he could just put whatever he normally uses in there, and he put in a 16g CBR. I did't know what size it was at the time, but it was bigger than I'd wanted, and also didn't fit properly.

Anyway, the whole part about my experience with a bad piercer is unrelated. What happened though, was that after wearing bigger jewelery in my nose, I decided I liked how it looked. (I have three holes in that nostril now.)

If your piercer doesn't have a tiny gem for her, I'm sure it won't be all that bad if she has to wear something larger for the healing period.
