hey guys, im REALLY keen to get my tongue web done, but, although im 18, my parents have thrown a hissy fit about the idea of it. so basically, i no this is a piercing i can get that they wont know about unless i show them... but im afraid that if i do it and cant talk properly, it will reveal my secret. any advice? anyone know how long my speech is likely to be affected by this piercing??? i want to go tomorrow, so if anyone can answer me, or tell me where to look for what im looking for, i'd really appreciate it ASAP. Cheers xxchicoxx

Mine didn't affect my speech at all when I got mine done and afterward... I'd say go for it

Well it isn't one of the most noticeable piercings (I can barely notice my friend's tongue web ring when he talks) - and as far as I know it doesn't effect speech or anything of that sort.
Go for it.

I've not heard of it affecting speech and it shouldn't be nticeable unless you open your mouth really wide when you talk. Go get it done! Plus you're 18, it's your choice

I've never had a customer speak oddly after getting one of these- but I only usually see them for about 15 minutes after the fact. But i've never gotten any feed back that would lead me to think otherwise.

It is an interesting piercing. Honestly, I think I'm more inclined to get my tongue web completely snipped out than pierced.

ETA: I've had long standing thoughts about things like this from time to time. Like, for instance, I find my right pinkie finger to be next to useless. I hardly ever use it. I've had dreams where it was removed, including everything up into the hand. Resulting not in a stub, which is not appealing, but rather a completely more streamlined hand that doesn't bulge out past the wrist. Anyway. I don't see a use for the tongue web, other than piercing it. It isn't high on my list of things to do, but its removal would be welcome to me.

I asked my piercer about getting both done too. If you get a barbell for your web, then a regular tongue piercing wouldn't effect it too much. If you get a ring though, it could always get tangled. I figure once it heals I'm gonna get my tongue done. I just got the web for now and I love it. As long as you get a barbell that fits your tongue it should be OK. Except while it's healing and you got the longer one. I dunno, we'll see what happens. Good luck!

I actually read something on BME at some point about twin bros who were going to attempt the pinky finger removal for a more streamline hand. Guess there are more people out there thinking like that than I would've thought.

Just to be clear, the pinky thing is most likely more fantasy, and not something I think I would actually do, even if I could get it done how I envision it medically. Who knows, though.
The tongue web thing, on the other hand, has actually been churned up to the forefront of my brain due in part to this conversation and for other reasons. I'm thinking that is likely going to get done next month. I'm waiting for some jewelry to come in, and when it does I'm thinking I will go in and have my ampallang redone (more straighter) and get the tongue web snipped out. Well, that is the current plan at least.

Just hope that your tongue doesn't like slip into the back of your throat while your sleeping. That tongue web is holding it in place. I dunno if that could actually happen but it might be somethin you wanna think about.

But it is certainly worth checking into a little. That would be less than pleasant to wake up to.

Hmm. I'm not saying that you are necessarily *wrong*, but in a nice way I am asking for any information you guys have to support this position. Lingual frenectomy is not an entirely uncommon procedure performed by oral surgeons for a number of different reasons, and I have never heard of someone swallowing or choking on their tongue as a result. Not like rarely, like _ever_. I actually asked a MD about it yesterday, and he told me that tongue swallowing is a myth, and that it isn't possible with or without a frenulum. Not that he is the be all end all authority or anything, he is just a guy with a degree. Dentists actually do this surgery fairly commonly so that people's dentures fit better. Doctors do it on kids to help their speech. I'm not sure what info you have that I don't have access to, but please provide me some links or something, because I would love to review it.

It isn't listed as a risk on the BME wikipedia site. http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Tongue_frenectomy But it is common sense.

Random, but according to that article snipping mine could help me. I have no prayer of ever sticking my tongue out and touching my tongue.
