How about you wait until you are old enough to get it done without needing your parents to sign for you at 18. You are only 16. For goodness sakes stop whinning! No wonder you parents won't let you get it done. Seems kinda ungratefull that you are calling your parents stupid, don't you think? Oh wait what am I thinking you are 16...at that age you know everything huh? Stop whinning! That's my advice!

For starters, don't whine. Do your OWN research, learn everyhting you possibly can about the risks associated with getting your tongue pierced. Sit down with your parents and have a nice, quiet, rational conversation, ask why they object, and answer any questions they have, show them your research, whatever. It also helps if you can tell them exactly WHY you want this piercing- a real(honest) reason, not an excuse. If they still say no, wait until your 17 and try again. No luck this time? Wait until you're 18- I'm sure your tongue will still be there.
Whatever you do, PLEASE do not pierce it yourself, let a friend pierce it, or go to a piercer who doesn't check ID- you're asking for trouble if you do

As a side note, getting informed, doing your research and knowing why you want a piercing is something I think you should do before getting any piercing- whether 16 or 60. You need to know what your getting yourself into and how to care for it.

a few points id like to make. 1 i didnt whinge, 2 i did do reaserch 3 you can get it done when 16 where i live without parental consent. i just wanted to be decent and get my parents permission. 3 dont worry i wont do it myself im really not that stupid 4 i do not know everything infact im quite stupid which is probably why i cant spell tongue! 4 i told them the reason i wanted it. its not because all my friends have it, cus only 2 people i know have it. its not peir pressure cus my friends think im mad, its because i want it, and trust me im a wuss. i wont even get my ears peirced so if im willing to get my tongue pierced its really a well reserched decision.

i have one more problem. what do you do when you get all the information and your parents say (and i quote) "they are piercers who just want your money im not believing a word they say!" ?

thanks for those people who actually tried to help.

iwannatungbarbad I think its really great that your waiting to get your parents permission before getting your tongue pierced most 16 year olds won't that just goes to show your respect for your parents. I live in Canada and the age were you no longer need your parents concent is 16. I was in the same boat your in when I was 16. Do your parents mind that you get your ears pierced? if they say its ok tell them its almost the same thing there aren't that many risks in getting your tongue pierced if you go to a qualified shop (not a hole in the wall) and if you take care of it during the healing procces.
iwannatungbarbad where are you from???
Good luck convincing your parents (parents can be stuborn sometimes).

For the love of God, type something legible.

But as for your predicament, I'd wait until you're 18, or until you're no longer under their roof. Or at least sit them down and show them various websites and show them other peoples' opinions on tongue piercings. My mom was the same way (not as bad, though) but I told her about risks, procedure, healing, and all that stuff in a calm matter and she eventually let me get it done. If I were you, I'd just stop asking them for a while and catch them on a good day and talk to them about it. If they still refuse, please respect their decision and just wait until you go out on your own. You're still young, don't rush.

Well, if piercers just want your money, then so so doctors, hairstylists, barbers, lawyers, and waitresses! That is the lamest thing ever. What are they supposed to be like monks, just doing it for god and living off the fat of the land, I think not. They do it cause they love it(or perhaps fell into it). They charge because they have to have food and shelter. If they were going to be in a profession for the money alone, then they would be dentists or somthing else that uses needles and makes much more money. What the heck are people thinking?

LMAO @ Chuck

My mother loves all my piercings, and actually brings me to the shop. I finally got her to get her nose pierced, and she now wants to get her tongue done too, and she's an awesome 42 year old mother. I love her to death. My mom has always rationalized my piercing obcession, by taking note of the fact that I've never done drugs, and always completed my school work. When she saw that I was taking responsibilty for the things I should've been - she was happy to give me something I wanted.

Good Luck.

Don't feel too bad.

I have a 16 year old daughter, and a 14 year old daughter. And they both want their tongues pierced.

And to each, I've given a very emphatic "I don't THINK so!"

Oh, and I'm a body piercer.

My main reason for not wanting to pierce my kids' tongues has nothing to do with safety or healing or immaturity -- my 16 year old has had her navel pierced since she was 14, and it's healed beautifully despite being one of the most aggressively physical soccer players in the State of Hawaii. My 14 year old has multiple cartilege piercings, and she took great care of those as well...she'll be getting her navel pierced also, by the end of the school year as my reward to her for making the honor roll.

(By the way, my son had orbital earlobe piercings when he was in first grade -- no problems with healing at all!)

Instead, my main reason against tongue piercings is simply because it implies to the general public that my daughters are sexually active -- more precisely, many ignorant members of society will view my daughters as being "sluts who like to give head." Whether my kids give head or not is not the point...the point is, other people will stereotype them as being tramps. I've discussed this with them -- about maintaining a proper image that they can be proud of -- and they seem to understand and agree.

In my opinion, minors with tongue piercings is just as trashy as minors who wear "hickey necklaces." And I am not gonna let my kids look like trashy teenagers, nor will I allow them to make me look like a negligent parent who doesn't care that his kids look like trashy teenagers.
