It is important to keep new piercings clean for a few reasons. The most obvious one is to reduce the chance of infection. The second reason is to remove crusties that develop, as they may irritate the piercing or delay healing if they get dragged into the hole itself. The third is for aesthetics- a crusty ear lobe or other visible piercing just looks gross.

This topic comes up periodically, and I’m going to address it in hopes that the mods might sticky it and save us all a lot of time.

I’ve self-pierced a few dozen times, so I’m not going to give a lecture. It might seem hypocritical of me to say I’ve self-pierced, and then argue against self-piercing. To quell those arguments, I have an advanced degree in Biomedical Sciences and have performed numerous small animal surgeries. I’ve been trained to perform surgeries, and still am reluctant to self-pierce. So, why is self-piercing such a bad idea?

this is just a reminder, and for those who might not have considered it (thank you to Minnie who brought it up):

For any woman contemplating getting genital or nipple piercings, the best time to get pierced is after your period. Try not to get pierced right before or during; you may be extra sensitive, the tissue swollen and tender. Some women may even find that they are more sensitive in other areas of the body at that time.

I am looking at getting my nipples done (all I have now are regular ear piercings) and the piercer I am considering will only use rings for the first jewelry. I don't have a problem with this, but I want to know if that's the norm, and why would it be prefered to barbells? I would think with a ring you would have a better change of getting it caught on something.

Thanks,
Heif

Smiling Hi Smiling

Am considering outer labia piercing on either side, but I was wondering:

* does it interfere with shaving?
* any chance of the old herpes infection uEvil2 flaring up due to the piercing? It has been dormant for a long time now.

Thanks for your input

Bip

Hey everyone!

I've never gotten a piercing but I have been admiring seveal different types for a while now. My friend just got his tongue web pierced and I really love the look of it but I don't want to go get that just a week after him! So the one I'm looking into is an outer conch orbital, like this one:

The thing is, I've heard conch orbitals are about as painful as ear piercings get. Can anybody vouch for this? Will it be tough for me to get one of those as my first piercing?
