Was wondering if it would be alright to re-pierce my tongue after an infection? The infection has subsided and is gone but if I re-pierce it will the infection come back?

You are the first person I ever heard of getting ain infection in a tongue piercing.

Can you provide more details about this supposed infection as well as how long you had the piercing, discharge color, barbell material, fit, aftercare...etc?

I had the piercing for about

Posted on August 15, 2008, 1:35 pm

I had the piercing for about 2 months. After a party, the next day my tongue was swollen, I had the chills, and it was difficult to eat. I thought it was just from me playing with the piercing too much so I ignored it for about 2 days. After that my tongue swelled up really bad, I couldn't eat any solid foods for 9 days and whenever I would drink something it would burn my tongue. I went to the doctors and his diagnosis was that I had a throat infection. You think that just by coincidence the throat infection infected my tongue piercing?

My aftercare for my tongue piercing was just rinsing with listerine every hour.

therein lies your problem. listerine kills ALL bacteria, even good bacteria that aids in healing and fights off infection.

So would it be fine to get my tongue re-pierced again?

Was just looking around the site and found out about listerine.

Is there still swelling or soreness? How long ago did you take it out? Just remember next time you have what you think is an infection don't remove the piercing...that can trap the infection and cause an abcess.

I would say if there is no more swelling or pain its ok to repierce, as long as it has had time to heal like a month or longer.

You should be ok. Just remember cut out the listerine. get biotene if you need mouth wash and do sea salt rinses.

I agree with Josho. Also, if you were not totally healed..which is possible thanks to the Listerine..you could have opened yourself up to an infection.

Cut out anything with alcohol in it for healing and you do not need to rinse so often, just after consuming anything that is not water.

Biotene or Crest Pro Health

Posted on August 15, 2008, 10:37 pm

Biotene or Crest Pro Health are good alternatives to Listerine. Both mouthwashes contain no alcohol.
