Pursuit of Happiness

I have never actually studied the Declaration of Independence, not even in high school. I felt an urge to read it the other day and since then I've been thinking...

It starts out with some pretty powerful language. The second paragraph begins, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

I had to look up "unalienable" and it means what I thought it meant: Not to be separated, given away, or taken away. This is powerful language!

The part that has been gnawing at me is the very last few words, "the pursuit of Happiness." I've never heard anyone speak about this before. I've heard it spoken, but never discussed. What exactly did they mean by this and why was it so important that "happiness" needed to be capitalized? Exactly HOW does one go about pursuing happiness anyway? Of course the definition of happiness isn't universal, but it's something like this: state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

Can a hungry man be happy? How about the a sick man? What about an abused man? A homeless man? I don't think so. I think it was our founding father's intentions that we set up a form of government that specifically worked to PREVENT these things.

When I hear someone say that the Government has no business in their lives, I wonder how much they like clean drinking water. I wonder if they enjoy having police and fire departments that are only a phone call away. I wonder if they enjoy driving on paved roads. I wonder if they feel safe with their seat belts and air bags. I wonder if they're secure knowing their children's classrooms aren't painted with lead based paint.

So who's responsibility is it to protect the Rights of the sick, poor, abused and homeless to pursue Happiness? Ours. It's up to us, as the voting public. Don't let hot-button words like "socialized medicine" fool you. After all, President Bush had surgery at a Navy hospital...paid for by all of us Tax Payers...aka: socialized medicine. It's good enough for the President, but not for the homeless?

It IS our responsibility. We send our sons and daughters to foreign lands to protect this RIGHT. You'd think we could take care of a tiny number of needy people right here at home too.

Happiness: a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. It's for every single one of us.

Very interesting perspective

Very interesting perspective and argument, John!
It is documented that the original draft of the Declaration of Independence stated Americans' unalienable rights as:

"life, liberty, and property"

but the 'property' was removed and changed to 'the pursuit of happiness' based on the framers' sentiments that not all Americans would be able to afford property (land or possessions) considering the fact that there would always be some level of debt or poverty in any realistic society. From my understanding, they changed this verbiage also because they did not want the Declaration to obligate the government to provide the poor with any property or possessions, as self-improvement and capitalistic imperialism were highly regarded values in the new democratic republic.

Although I agree that a sick or a hungry person has very little chance of being truly happy, it almost seems to me that the framers may have 'opted out' of holding the government responsible for providing citizens happiness, as they promise merely the opportunity for the 'pursuit' of happiness. Yet another way our society rewards the gifted and wealthy and promotes the survival of the fittest allowing the dispartiy between rich and poor to continually grow...

I don't think that changes or argues against anything I said. In fact, that's exactly my point...the promise of the opportunity is what didn't exist in the first place.

Any American citizen can be wiped out by a random disease, such as a Cancer or a brain tumor. And I mean, WIPED OUT. They can lose their job, home, savings...everything. It happens all the time. But it's not just that citizen who's affected but the entire family can be financially ruined. College funds depleted, health insurance, investments and retirements gone.

So not only is one person's ability to pursue happiness ripped away by a random disease, entire families can lose the ability to pursuit it as well.

But if the government (tax payers) actually took care of us medically, the financial ruin wouldn't happen. The children would still have a home, an education, health care,...you know, a bright future where the pursuit of happiness would still be possible. Generations wouldn't be wiped out at a time.

To me, this is clearly stated in the words of our Declaration.
