I just tattooed myself

I just started a tattoo on my thigh...it's only my 3rd tattoo, but it's looking pretty good. There's a lot to do still, but my neck was just killing me being all hunched over so I had to call it quits.

It will eventually be 2 monkeys and some foliage...in a Korean watercolor style. I probably should have done something simpler to start. Oh well.

I just realized that it sort of looks like a skull.

I love how the plant outline looks embrodiered onto your skin. Also, the fuzzy monkeys makes a really nice compliment to the boldly out-lined plants and ground.

Can't wait to see it finished!

Posted on April 11, 2008, 1:08 am

Thanks again. It is fun! It has healed up nicely...lightened a little as expected and it looks good. I'm feeling more confident that I'll be able to turn it into a decent tattoo.

I'm moving in a couple weeks and I'll probably be in a shop again...un-retired? I got offered a job managing a shop but they want me to be the Piercer too. We'll see. I don't know if I can ever be a full time Piercer again. I'm really burnt out on it. But I might be able to handle part time piercing if I can learn to tattoo as well. Like I said, we'll see.

I'll post another photo or two all healed up soon. uBanana

Dumb question... Is the ink brown or black? Inb the first pic it looks to be more brown but later on looks black.

It's black pigment. The first one is fairly fresh so the redness is showing through pretty good.

I will be adding a lot of browns though to give it an old paper look. Here's to hoping. LOL

The tattoo is still in progress and I've been super busy with so many things...no new pictures yet.

I did a new one on my other thigh...a Tribal Lotus with Peter from Family Guy popping out of the middle wearing women's underwear. I love this new tattoo. LOL.

I will put up some more pictures to share soon...really.

John I especially like the monkeys! Nice to do it in an "artistic" style.

Thanks for posting the link on scratchers. I have a friend who is trying to learn to tattoo, and I am going to forward it. What, specifically, were the "good points" you wanted us to notice?

What we often fail to acknowledge in our haste to support professional body artists is that most of the tattoers and piercers working today started on themselves. Maybe it's not a good idea in the grand scheme of things, but for certain people, it's an irresistible urge, which compels them not only to mark themselves, but to eventually learn enough to mark others.

Cloud, Mostly I like the

Posted on July 23, 2008, 3:35 pm

Cloud,

Mostly I like the part about how he was using disposable tubes and not attempting to sterilize anything at all in his home.

Tattoo Machines can be very difficult to sterilize...rubbers, plastics and metal combinations can all create their own little problems. Most tattoo machines are never sterilized at all...ever. And it really is ok if...

...IF, that's an important word...IF the artist applies medical aseptic technique to the application of tattoos.

And this is the problem with "scratchers," in my opinion. I pretty much believe that if someone is willing to allow a novice to work on them they can't be expecting professional-quality work...and they aren't expecting liver disease either At least I hope not.

If a scratcher doesn't know and understand disease prevention then I think his actions are criminal. But if he disinfects correctly, uses gloves correctly and uses barriers correctly then he should be called a novice and not a scratcher.

You're right that most artists start on themselves (Piercers too). You gotta start somewhere if you cannot find an apprenticeship and you have an unwavering desire. I respect that drive because I've had it a couple times. And I know it can lead to death (literally) or to success. It depends on the seriousness and willingness to learn on the part of the novice. Ego kills.
