Today was orientation at school for one of my nursing classes that covers child bearing and child rearing families. We were on a tour of the labor and delivery floor and the question was asked whether epidurals(sp?) could be done through tattoos. My instructors response was that this could not be done as ink could travel to the brain blah blah blah. I remembered reading on bme that this was a myth, however not having any amazing sources I didn't say anything. But I feel the need to email my instructor information suggesting that this is infact a myth....but i'm not sure if I would be out of line? What do you all think?

Unless you can find some

Posted on September 4, 2008, 1:47 pm

Unless you can find some study that proves its a myth, then its probably a lost cause. If you do find a study then approach it from a "Here's what I've found regarding this issue, what do you think?" standpoint. As long as you approach it as a learning experience rather than an "I'm right you're wrong" position then any professor worth his/her salt wouldn't have a problem with it.

not that it holds any scientific clout, but the wife had an epidural through a tattoo, and it didn't seem to cause an issue..

Yeah....I'm not able to

Posted on September 4, 2008, 4:38 pm

Yeah....I'm not able to really find a study on it. Most of what I find on the subject (not from studies) is that it "could" but there isn't any scientific evidence to support one side or the other... It would make a good paper at some point in time ....

Funny how you mention that

Posted on September 4, 2008, 7:05 pm

Funny how you mention that cuz I was arguing with a girl at the piercing studio/tattoo shop near my school about this today.

I agree with Primal on this one. You are in college, use the college website to search medical journals for this.

I suggest that you do not step on your professors toes, as he controls the grade book. What he assumes may be correct or he may have a good reason for having brown eyes. Do the research on the subject for your benefit, don't worry about what he said in class. It would be like arguing religion or politics, there are no winners.

Look around for a bit if you can find good sources Id take the what do you think approach. If I read correctly, this was on the first day?If your professor is adamant about this subject and they get annoyed with you on the first day...well you get the idea. If ya look around for info youll also be getting a feel for the profs attitude towards things like that.

When I looked I couldn't find any info on it...I really only searched CINAHL though...maybe one day they will get some evidence that says whether or not problems will arise from givng an epidural through a tattoo...

Posted on September 6, 2008, 5:05 pm

I've heard of quite a few girls getting them even with tattoos in the area. The two girls my age that I know who both got "knocked up" had tattoos there and still had an epidural. I really think it depends on the doctor and his/her own individual thoughts on the matter...

Kind of like how some doctors overreact to piercings without much real research or knowledge. I thought my family doctor was going to tear one of my piercings out of my head once, and she's pretty laid back compared to some.

Then again, I've heard of tattoo artists who will leave a small area on the spine for epidurals, which, is ridiculous in my mind since tattoo artists most likely don't know much about the complexity of the spinal cord (no offense).
