The books in these group show gorgeous indigenous and tribal jewelry. Many of the forms of jewelry we wear today are modeled after these traditional forms.

"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher is one of the most gorgeous books around. This book is not specifically focused on body art, but rather all forms of adornment. Not to be missed, even if you have to get it out of the library.

"Power and Gold: Jewelry from Indonesia and the Phillipines" is a museum issued catalog of jewelry, but with a great narrative. Gorgeous pics of mondo piercing jewelry, headhunter tattoos, and all. This is a book I spotted at an APP convention once and made a note of--years later I found a bargain on a used copy. Soooo totally worth it! Check out the picture of that GIGANTIC spiral ear jewelry, and then the picture of the lady wearing it. It attaches to her headdress!

And finally, Blake Perlingieri's book is listed here, as well as in the "history of modern piercing" category. Numerous photos and descriptions of jewelry from Nomad's piercing museum collection appear here. The book makes the point that many pieces of body jewelry in museums around the world have been misidentified as other things. Very worth it! (and did I mention you can buy that book here on Tribe?)

Happy reading!

Please excuse my second post

Please excuse my second post in ten minutes here. I can't resist. The book Africa Adorned...now out of print I believe, is a real classic on this topic. I first saw this book back in the early 90's when I was to recieve my first piercing. Anna Edwards, owner of Body Works in Portland, OR had this book in her reception room. This text 'opened' my eyes to the fact that other people in other lands define beauty in ways that seem different or odd to me, but normal to them. Excellent photography and naration. I also recommend this book...Africa Adorned. And yes, it may be in your local library. prinzalbert

Hey! I didn't even see this post. Sorry--it's not a good system, you have to physically go back on all the posts to see if someone has commented.

But I guess you've noticed that.

Yes, it is a very beautiful book. I got it from Amazon, or ebay, or something. . . as a treat for me.

Hi Cloud. I am just now going through my previous posts and answers. In regards to the book Africa Adorned, as a treat to yourself. I also believe 'self inflicted' treats are a good thing, We should do it as often as $$$ allow. Prinzalbert
