I was my friends labor coach
Posted on October 22, 2008, 6:53 pmI was my friends labor coach and OMG it was the grossest thing I have ever seen in my life, and you could tell the pain she was in. BUT it was also the most amazing thing I have ever seen!! I would love to be in a delivery room again to see a birth.
Have fun!!

I had my son at home 'au
Posted on October 22, 2008, 7:02 pmI had my son at home 'au naturel', with a midwife and no drugs. It was awesome. I was lucky enough to have a 7 hour labor and everything went swimmingly. I puked every time they tried to get me to drink water, and that was the worst part of it for me. I would give birth any day of the week. I had a half hour of pushing and two torn spots, but you cannot feel the tearing specifically. The bruised swollen feeling for two weeks following is worse than the vaginal delivery itself . . . and somehow this was the thing no one ever mentioned . . . hmm . . . Well, it sounds exciting, hope you have fun!

I don't want to seem like
Posted on October 22, 2008, 11:26 pmI don't want to seem like debby downer, but be prepared for the scary stuff too. It took me by suprise when everything went suddenly wrong when I had my son, and it was very scary. I'm sure you will handle it wonderfully, but just a word of caution that not everything goes as plan you know? I was lucky enough to have everything turn out fine, but thats not always the case
On a happy note, YAY BABIES!!!! You get to see cute little squished faces, and tiny hands and feets!!! Let us know how it goes.

I've just been there, done
Posted on October 23, 2008, 9:43 amI've just been there, done that on the delivery part. (Not easy I may add!) My husband and mother were the stand-bys when I had my children. My husband said it's the most amazing thing he's ever saw. Congrats to you and hope you have good experiences!

My oldest sister has three
Posted on October 23, 2008, 10:12 amMy oldest sister has three children and has never had a labor pain. When she called the hospital after delivering there before to tell them that she was coming in they met her at the door with a wheel chair and then took her to the delivery room.

WEll I did not get to see
Posted on October 23, 2008, 3:34 pmWEll I did not get to see vag/babies together today. HOwever we did see two cute little boys.
We all did an assessment together..and I almost cried when I heard his precious heart. He was only 4hrs old. He was crying during part of it so I had him suck my finger...I loved it.
My friends sister had gone to the L&D room, and was given her epidural by the time we left today..
So hopefully by tomorrow we can see her baby!!

I am SOOO not the person to
Posted on October 24, 2008, 3:21 amI am SOOO not the person to ask about pregnancy, labor, OR delivery. Mine were easy peasy. With my second son, a nurse held my one leg up and Billy was holding my other. Billys head was resting on the inside of my knee so that he could see Chris being born. When his head came out they told me to look down and they had turned him so that his face was looking at me. IT WAS AWESOME!!!! Having a baby is the most wonderful thing in the world - of course raising them after that is the cross to bear.
Enjoy your rotation, who knows, it might just be the field you want to go into. I think it would be a very challenging, busy, and rewarding floor to work on. What more could you ask?
I'm not the girl next door. I'm the bitch down the street.

STill no deliveries today.
Posted on October 24, 2008, 3:54 pmSTill no deliveries today.
But my patients were really awesome. Mom and her baby girl!!
So my partner and I got to do their assessments and bath the baby. I also watched a circumcision which was hard to watch...but definitely interesting to see.

OH Scaly! I want to type
Posted on November 4, 2008, 12:51 amOH Scaly! I want to type this up before I forget. Have you been taught how to feel the uterus after birth to see if it's shrinking? If so, when you get to actually feel it on a woman who just gave birth, PLEASE don't do circles. LOL. Sounds weird, sorry. After I had my son, there was a nurse showing a new one how to feel if my uterus was shrinking correctly and she was all digging around and doing circles on my tummy and such and it hurt SOOOOOOOOOOO bad. Then the main nurse caught her, and was like "oh no don't do it that way!" It hurt bad enough when it has to be pushed and prodded regularly, but oh dear Lord that hurt. So anyways, thats from a patients view.
Have you gotten to see anymore stuff??

Posted on November 4, 2008, 7:47 amThanks star for the info!! I was shown to just palpate (push I guess) lightly with the side of my hand...and you had to center the uterus and such first(if its lopsided ).
I go back for an evening Thursday and Friday. I think I will see something then b/c it seems most of the births happen in the evening...(or thats when the other groups seen more).

WOW WOW WOW! I had
Posted on November 8, 2008, 10:07 amWOW WOW WOW!
I had spectacular evening lastnight at clinical!! I did an admission on mom and baby, and did the moms checks(assess vitals, feel the height of her uterus, check to make sure there was no clots and such) every hour.
I saw a vaginal delivery...which was super awesome!! (I got teary eyed), and I gave my first injection!!!
Gosh I almost felt like a nurse! I was doing everything on my own...LOVED IT!
