There are so many things
Posted on November 21, 2008, 11:35 amThere are so many things wrong with this list that to explain it all would necessitate creating another equally long list.
Bob Dylan #7? Really?
Wilson, Nina Simone, Patsy Cline, need I continue?
If this was a list of songwriters, no question, but singers? Who thinks Bob Dylan is, was, ever has been a better singer than Al Green, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Smokey Robinson Etta James, Jackie mother
Axl Rose a spot ahead of David Ruffin, and four spots ahead of Wilson Pickett? Bitch please!
Anyone who thinks Levon Helm belongs at #91 has never put on The Last Waltz, cranked up Ophelia, and given it a good listen.
Joe Cocker at #97 - Automatically renders the list invalid
This is unfortunately exactly what I have come to expect from Rolling Stone

I love Neil Young. He has
Posted on November 21, 2008, 11:54 amI love Neil Young. He has the most ridiculous mind boggling mastery of feedback. He can, and has actually played entire songs solely by manipulating the feedback through his amp and guitar. I've seen him do it. It is a sight to behold seeing and hearing the man turn a sound engineer's worst nightmare into music. He is a brilliant songwriter. However, even his most die hard fans will tell you that his voice is not his strong suit. It is quirky and odd, and it does lend much character to his songs, but for everything that it brings to the performance, a top notch vocalist he is not.
Sam Cooke could sing the federal tax code and make you swoon.

Anything from the Ragged
Posted on November 21, 2008, 12:35 pmAnything from the Ragged Glory tour is a good spot to look for it. Blowin' In the Wind and Like a Hurricane are a couple of songs that he often uses a lot of harnessed feedback on.
If you are really hardcore into feedback, there is always to Arc disc that came out with the Weld live set. It's a 35 minute compilation of feedback, vocal clips, and even stage announcements and noise form setup and teardown of the stage and sound system. One track, all noise.

Posted on November 21, 2008, 1:23 pmI can't stand Bob Dylan's music. I am convinced that people praise him as a musician only because they want to look like they know what they're talking about. All these young people with Bob Dylan shirts and posters....posers! They have probably never even listened to his records, but it's cool to say you like Bob Dylan, just like it's cool to say you like the Ramones. Buy the Greatest Hits compilations of both artists and be the hippest (fake) music snob on your block! Just don't let your friends hear you playing your Nickleback CD.

I do actually like Bob
Posted on November 21, 2008, 2:59 pmI do actually like Bob Dylan, I just don't think he belongs on this list.
He is a great songwriter, and once upon a time was an adequate singer. All Along the Watchtower is a great song, but after hearing what Jimi Hendrix did with it, I would be embarrassed to play it again. Mr Zimmerman is a legend, but I've heard better singing at a karaoke bar.
What makes it even worse is that on the last couple of tours that he did, his performance was incredibly lackluster. It was painfully obvious that either his heart is not in it any more, or he is about to keel over. As my previously mentioned buddy Neil Young said "It's better to burn out than fade away."

Posted on November 21, 2008, 3:46 pmS'ok, I thought that was Kurt Cobain!! Silly me. I'm gonna play the "I wasn't born then" card I think.
I should be in that list. Bob Dylan should not.

Posted on November 25, 2008, 7:14 pmCalm down peeps!
Remember, this list was created by asking artists, journalists and industry insiders for their favourite singers of the rock era. It's not gospel, or definitive! Let them have their own opinion and their own favourites!! As the French say, chacun à son goût!
