Yep I see where you are
Posted on March 14, 2008, 5:18 amYep I see where you are coming from! I think people get annoyed with 'Did it hurt?' because it's sorta like, well obviously it hurt, a needle just got shoved through my skin! I guess what people should ask instead is "How much did that hurt?" I way prefer that question hehehe.

Posted on March 14, 2008, 5:25 amI don't get annoyed with the question, what I do get annoyed with is if they ask about a certain piercing and I say "Not that bad." (if it's one that didn't hurt that bad) They look at me like I'm crazy in complete disbelief.
It's called STRETCHING your piercings, not gauging them.

Posted on March 14, 2008, 10:45 amYeah I don't mind the question. Depending on which piercing I'll either say nah it wasn't that bad, or yeah it hurt like a b**** lol.

Everyone has a different
Posted on March 14, 2008, 11:10 amEveryone has a different pain tolerance. When I had my nipple pierced, I had very little pain and when Shell posted she said that hers hurt like hell.
It is hard to tell someone what the piercing will be like for them, so I relate an average of what others have said about there experience of the piercing. Do I get upset when asked, there is no reason to.

The process does not really
Posted on March 14, 2008, 11:26 amThe process does not really bother me, but at the same its like others have said a needle is going through a piece of your skin/flesh, so it is going to hurt.
It seems to me that most people get annoyed with the question when it is asked to decided wether or not to get a piercing (I want to get ______, but does it hurt?). For nearly everybody the pain is different, depending on pain tolerance and sensitivity in the area being pierced. So getting a consensus about how bad a piercing hurt is kind of difficult, and you'll just have to go get it and find out yourself.

Posted on March 14, 2008, 12:30 pmPlus if you really want the piercing, a couple seconds of pain (if that) isn't worth not getting it.

i only think it's annoying
Posted on March 14, 2008, 1:36 pmi only think it's annoying when people say, "I want to get a piercing, but I'm afraid it's going to hurt."
I mean, c'mon, suck it up or find another hobby.
i guess the thing that needs to be made clear about the "did it hurt?" question is how subjective in nature the answer is. but once that's understood, it's a legitimate question, and the answer isn't always "yes" (didn't feel my tongue being pierced at all, for example).

I can honestly say that I'd
Posted on March 14, 2008, 1:41 pmI can honestly say that I'd rather get piercing than, say, a sunburn. Sunburns last longer, and have more annoying "aftercare."

Posted on March 14, 2008, 5:42 pmAH, I have 4 large birds and generally piercing questions come along with my bird ownership, and I just tell them that it hurts less than my amazon bite and they can try feeding their finger to my bird to see if they can stand it
I am only slightly mean and only because people who ask me aim more towards telling me I am a crazy person. All my friends have way too many piercings of their own and actually tell ME what hurts and how to make it better before I go through that

I don't mind the question so
Posted on March 14, 2008, 8:22 pmI don't mind the question so much, but since I have a lot of ear piercings, they are (obviously) quite visible and easy to notice. I'll be talking to people at work and they will interupt me while I am in the middle of a sentence to ask my "OMG did that hurt?" Not only does just about everyone interupt me, but I get it like 3 times a day it seems. It's not even like I have anything that crazy or large gauge. The biggest one is my inner conch which is only 14g, and I have a small labret stud in it.

Hahaha at ambuckmaster! I
Posted on March 16, 2008, 6:08 amHahaha at ambuckmaster!
I used to always tell people, "Heck yes it hurt!" when they asked. Cause all my piercings HAD really hurt. I used to think that the people who said it didn't hurt were just interpreting the pain differently or something. After my most recent piercings though, two in my nostril, anyone who asks me if they hurt (which has been surprisingly few people, probably cause there are a lot more pierced people in Barcelona than in other places where I've lived) is in for an earful.
If I can get them to listen to me for long enough, I'll tell them that yes, most of them hurt, but the piercing pain only lasts a very short time. Then I explain how the two most recent ones really didn't hurt me an that maybe if they get luck and have a really good piercer, it won't hurt them either, and there's always the "everybody's different!" thrown in there too. So, it can be annoying, but I also like being asked about my piercings, like our OP here, especially if someone's actually interested and not just being a smartass.

I certainly don't mind
Posted on March 16, 2008, 6:58 amI certainly don't mind talking about how much it hurt. To me the pain is an important part of the process; I'll gladly lecture anybody about it for as long as they can stand.

I always ask that question
Posted on March 16, 2008, 2:22 pmI always ask that question because I just like to get a general idea. I had been contemplating getting my septum pierced for about a year before I actually got it done. During this time I asked numerous septum owners about the pain. And it was half and half. I found mostly that the people who said their septum piercing hurt were the ones who's piercers used clamps. The people who went to piercers who did it freehand did not experience pain. And lucky for me, my piercer did mine freehand so yeah - it was nothing!

piercings do hurt... I got 4
Posted on March 16, 2008, 3:00 pmpiercings do hurt... I got 4 in one day in my left helix... it hurt a little, nothing I noticed too much (I am a vet tech, so I get beat up by animals and stab myself with needles on accident all day long....)
HOWEVER, healing hurts... for 2 weeks I would wake up in pain if I rolled onto that ear... It hurts when I get my clothing over my head... and my favorite - we had a light that rotates over a surgery table, and the other day we had an IV bag handing on it, when the doc rotated the light, caught my ear on the IV line and pulled... that hurts... and even thought it may not hurt all that much during actual procedure - it sure hurts while it is healing... I think it took my ear 2-3 weeks to deflate and stop being all red...

It doesn't really bother me,
Posted on March 16, 2008, 3:23 pmIt doesn't really bother me, but like someone else said, when people just don't believe you that it didn't hurt that much is annoying.

It's the context. If
Posted on March 17, 2008, 7:49 pmIt's the context. If someone is looking at you derisively and sneering and asking if it hurt, they don't really want to know. They just want to be jerky. Or if they ask and don't believe you when you say it didn't (none of my visible ones did), what is the point of asking? And anything gets annoying if repeated often enough.

I haven't been asked how
Posted on March 17, 2008, 11:55 pmI haven't been asked how much my piercings hurt.
I've been asked, "So how did it go?" which is fine and not rude as they were generally interested, but what I've found I am annoyed by is those who make their displeasure of piercings immensely clear to me.
"Ew, ew, you got them pierced? I have goose bumps now, just...ugh." That is annoying. It's disrespectful. It's like judging someone for dressing a different style than yourself.
I also don't understand the comment, "But you don't look like a piercing person." Is there even a "type" of person that falls in line of a person who likes piercings?
